Wye Valley Brewery Race Day

The sun was shining, more or less, on the Wye Valley Brewery Race Day at Ludlow Racecourse yesterday. I was invited as a guest of the brewery and enjoyed some special behind-the-scenes access.

Jonjo O’Neill Jr

We started off walking the course with professional jockey Jonjo O’Neill Jr. He explained in detail about the course, how he was preparing for the day’s racing and what to look for around the course and the jumps. After that, it was into the Wye Valley tent to sample the star of the day – Nightjar British Stout. This nitro stout has a fantastic bitter coffee flavour, with an incredibly creamy, lingering finish. A perfect pint to toast the runners and riders!

Lilly Pinchin

I watched some of the races and then had the opportunity to meet another professional jockey, Lilly Pinchin. Lilly is a really inspirational athlete who only rode out her claim five months ago (this is how jockeys turn pro). unusually, she does not come from a riding background, so she really is achieving great things. She showed us the different saddles and lead weights that are used to make sure that all of the riders are at the correct weight.

I also got the chance to join the Amor family in picking the best turned out horse at the last race. We selected Six Foot Lap, which was probably fortunate, as the horse ended up coming in 15th! So at least they had something to take home.

It was a lovely day. The Ludlow Racecourse is small, but a truly stunning location. The Shropshire Hills flank the view over the plain. I have to confess I’m not much of a gambler, so I wasn’t tempted to have a flutter. But I really enjoyed watching the races and getting up close and personal with the horses. I did not know a thing about horse racing before, but I’ve got the gist now. I would definitely recommend a day out at the races to anyone, particularly if you can enjoy it with a pint of HPA in hand!
