Wine Tasting at Anthony’s of Wellington

With the festive season about to step up a notch with the Wellington Christmas lights switch on tomorrow, it was the perfect time for a wine tasting at Anthony’s of Wellington. If you’re not familiar with this fantastic butchers, then you might not realise that as well as stocking some delicious foodie treats they also have by far the best range of drinks in town.

We were treated to 8 wines from their range last night. The night was introduced by Victoria Horton of Addison Wines. They supply the wines to the shop and I have to say that it is a really enviable selection at a great price. Everything we tried, except for the English sparkling wine of course, came in at under £15 a bottle, which I thought was really great value for the quality.

My favourites

The stand out wines for me included the Côte du Danube Pinot Noir. It was full of black cherry flavours and quite a hot finish (as it is 14.5% ABV!) I thought it would be wonderful with some of the excellent beef that you can get from the butcher’s counter. I also really enjoyed the Puglian Primitivo by Botter, which also had cherry flavours, a hint of plum and a wonderful rich, creamy mouthfeel. Another solid winter warmer which was a bit of a surprise for an IGT wine (look for DOC and DOCG from Italy for the best quality, IGT is a bit like the English PDO being a slightly better status than PGI.)

In summary

We had some nibbles and laughs along the way. I was joined by Zoe from Rowton Vineyard, so I had my own English wine expert on hand. This was helpful when it came to the absolutely delicious sparkling red wine from Halfpenny Green in Staffordshire. We also tasted the Rosado from Paso Primero – made from grapes grown in Spain by a Shrewsbury winemaker, Tom.

This was the first event in a series of tasting. Next up, the Henstone Distillery will be presenting a session on gin on 30th November. Then Moonshine and Fuggles will be focusing on rum on 7th December. Places can be booked by getting in touch with the butchers directly. I would heartily recommend booking a ticket. These are all brilliant local businesses and I’m sure there will be some real insight into the drinks.

We were invited to the event as guests, but my opinions are my own. As anyone who has met me will know.
