I imagine the T’interweb algorithms are going to hate this, but I love The Cock Hotel. It was our first visit to the relatively recently refurbished Wellington boozer today and I was impressed. What a lovely collection of spaces! It’s like the tardis. It looks fine from the outside, but inside it is a veritable treasure trove. Architecturally and breweriana-wise it is an eclectic and wonderful space to throw away some time.
If you book ahead on Wednesdays, you can get 15% off food. This made the rump steak on the lunch menu even crazier value. An absolutely beautiful cut of meat, sensitively prepared. A real steal at the price. The cheeseburger was nice too, but not a patch on the steak to be honest.

Here for the beer
Of course, there is a fine selection of Joule’s beers on offer, this being a Joule’s pub. The ones that I tried were fantastic. Really nicely conditioned, great flavour. Each one really speaks of the style that it represents. I particularly liked the Stone IPA on keg and the Slumbering Monk English dark bitter on cask. Full of flavour and incredibly drinkable.

Cannot think of a single negative thing to say about The Cock Hotel. At first I thought that my burger bun was burnt, but on further inspection it was actually perfectly toasted. Enough to give flavour, but not tasting carbonised. That’s it, that’s the critique.
They have a wonderful beer garden with a converted stable block, so great in the summer. The log fire is ready to go for the colder nights ahead. Cracking.
