Taste Not Waste – Food waste in Telford

I accidentally came across a group that helps combat food waste in Telford. They are called Taste Not Waste. I have been using food waste supermarkets and projects for a good ten years now since they first started popping up. Food waste is a massive problem in the UK. With the cost of, well, everything going up endlessly at the moment, it is also a really economical way to get your food shop.

You may have heard of the Too Good To Go app. Maybe you have shopped at Save It Discount Store in Wellington. They are both brilliant and I highly recommend them. This is the first time I have found somewhere that delivers directly to your home. The past boxes looked great on their Facebook page, but I didn’t really know what to expect.

You pay your £10, plus £3.25 delivery ready for delivery on a Thursday. They go anywhere within a 7-mile radius of TF3 4DR. Your box will contain a random mix of fruit and vegetables, some ambient items and some fridge/freezer bits. It all depends on what they have salvaged from supermarket surplus and the like within the week. Some of the fruit may be a bit bruised, and frozen items need to be consumed within 24 hours of defrosting.

What did we get?

Our box was absolutely amazing. I’ll try and list the contents as best I can:

  • 2 Romaine lettuces
  • 1 iceberg lettuce
  • bunch of spring onions
  • big portion of French beans
  • big portion of mange touts
  • 5kg-ish of carrots
  • 2kg-ish of potatoes
  • cherry tomatoes
  • 2 frozen packs of strawberries
  • 3 lemons
  • 1 avocado (firm)
  • 1 mango
  • Large punnet blueberries
  • Large punnet cherries
  • mushrooms
  • 3 different kinds of oranges – about 20 altogether
  • 5 or 6 pears
  • 2 peaches
  • 2 apples
  • 3 peppers
  • 1 red onion
  • 1 portion of brussel sprouts
  • 1 pack of coriander
  • 2 small farmhouse loaves
  • 4 bags of crisps
  • 3 500g packs of pasta
  • 1 pack of rice
  • 1 pasta/sauce packet
  • 40 teabags
  • 1kg cous cous
  • Small pack of ham
  • 3 chicken breasts
  • 500g beef mince
  • 2 seabass fillets
  • smoked salmon
  • 2 ready meals
  • 1l goat’s milk
  • pack of wraps
  • 1l San Pelligrino Arancia

I think that’s everything. I mean, the beef mince, chicken breasts and sea bass fillets alone would come to a tenner, so I think this is excellent – unbelievable – value. If you’re looking to stretch your food budget a bit further I highly recommend. But you get what you get, so one for the creative cooks and not the fussy feeders!
