Dina Restaurant, Wellington

There’s a new Kurdish restaurant in the form of the Dina Restaurant Wellington. The new space has only been open for a couple of weeks. It’s a friendly place, with plenty of seating and a family friendly vibe. If you’re not familiar with Kurdish food there are a lot of parallels with the food you may have had at Turkish establishments in the past, but also some local specialities that you may not see elsewhere.

I was delighted to be presented with a bowl of lentil soup upon arrival, which was delicious. This is something I’ve had before at Kurdish-run establishments in other parts of the country. A firm favourite of mine, it is velvety, quite salty and warming.

I was only in the market for a quick snack during my visit, so I had the chicken shawarma. I don’t do excess spice heat, so my lightly spiced flakes of moist chicken were dressed with a yoghurt sauce that had a really delightful lemon flavour. It was all wrapped in a fresh naan which was pillowy and light, with just the right amount of chew. You can buy those in a pack of four to take away too if you want to.

I’m looking forward to trying more from the menu. There is dolma on there, chicken and lamb kuzi and a whole bunch of other dishes that I will report back on in due course!
