CHRISTOPHER’S SHIFNAL – I have to admit, I am a real sucker for googling menus and food pics when I’m scoping out somewhere new. So when I heard about Christopher’s in Shifnal, I could resist having a good old rummage down the back of the internet to see what I could find. And the early signs are good. Very good in fact.
What can we expect?
An independent restaurant that falls into the modern bistro category, they offer well-presented food that takes inspiration from a diverse range of global cuisines. Steaks and the like are sourced from local producers. The menus are reasonably priced for this level of restaurant. Starters are around the £7 mark, mains from approximately £16 and up. Desserts will set you back £5.95 in most instances. They are certainly competing on price with big chains that are not serving up anything remotely as interesting.
The whole thing is inside one of the oldest buildings in town, very chocolate boxey with a Tudor feel. In fact, some of the exposed beams date back to the 16th century, so they have a REALLY Tudor feel.
New Menu at Christopher’s Shifnal
This September you can head in to sample the new menu. It has a distinctly autumnal feel, as befits the season we are (I know, I’m sorry) hurtling towards now. The starters really have a lot of variety available, but I think I would be ordering the sundried tomato and mozzarella arancini or Karnataka-style mussels. I really like the sound of the pan-fried duck breast with sweet potato mash, green beans and cherry sauce for main. But I am absolutely tempted the tofu mee goreng with pak choi, spring onions and noodles too. If you’ve got space for a pudding, I think the affogato would be the lightest option, but I must confess to being rather partial to a cheeseboard as well.
What’s the deal?
We can agree, the menu sounds tempting. But to sweeten the deal even further, you can enjoy a free bottle of wine on Wednesday and Thursday when two of you enjoy a 2-course meal. How’s that for a slice of fried gold? I’m liking what I hear. I cannot wait to head over to try Christopher’s for myself. In fact, I haven’t been to Shifnal yet, so that’s a treat in store generally. Let me know how you find it and your Shifnal recommendations in the comments below.
